House Hunting, What You Want and Need

House Hunting, What You Want and Need

House Hunting is made easier if you start with what you WANT and what you NEED in a home. I'm working with a first time buyer now who has taken the steps as recommended to make a list of what she must have and what she wants in a home. This is an important step to assist the real estate agent in selecting properties to view, in confirming how close the home she selects is ideal, and to consider if she finds herself slipping away from what she initially had in mind.

Included in the list of wants and needs should be obviously a list of attributes about the home itself, number of bedrooms, baths, basement, driveway, garage, physical size, lot size, etc. As important is to consider is the location from employment, schools, restaurants, sense of community, access to services you use often. Rate these things in importance. Realize you won't get everything you want in a single home but when you find THE home know which things you are willing to forgo.

Starting off with a list is important not only so you get what you want in a home, but it will re enforce your decisions about homes you do not feel compelled to write an offer. Buying a home is an emotional process especially when you find the one that meets most of  your wants and needs. Make a list to reaffirm your decision.

I recently spoke with someone who bought a home five months ago and is unhappy with the decision. They don't care for the neighbors and they don't like some of the physical attributes of the home. It is unfortunate that now they are looking to move again already. Even experienced home buyers need a check list.
